His interest in acting began when he was in college. He studied acting at University of Colorado at Boulder. Although he's been active in both films and television, however it is his roles in the smaller screen which earned him a cult fans. The actor has the ability to portray characters of both the bad and good aspects in the law enforcement system. He is able attract the attention of his audience easily. He portrayed the role of a serial killer on his debut television show and then went on to play the role that of a NYPD detective. He has been nominated multiple times for prestigious Emmy Awards and the PRISM Awards for his tiny screen performance. He is known for his blue-piercing eyes, which have become a signature and helped portray tough characters with charisma. People's magazine listed him as one of the Sexiest Men Alive for 2006.
